DIY Feather Art & Symbolism

It’s always a perfect time of year to appreciate the beauty of a feather.  When I see a feather on the ground, I pick it up.  I see each feather as a message from my guardian angels, and recognize that they are with me offering guidance, support, and protection.  Feathers, from my viewpoint, are a sign of good luck and good things to come.  I pick up every feather I see and I give gratitude to the angels who sent it.

The highest of angelic signs is receiving the gift of a feather.  Feathers remind me to be present and remain aware of the angelic support that is there for me to receive on a continuous basis. When was the last time you noticed a feather?  Your guardian angels are waiting for you to take notice to their messages, so be ready to embrace the gift and pick up the next feather that appears in your path.

Let’s talk about the symbolism in the colors of feathers you may find.  Color is one of the elements of art.  Color is also an element of life.  Without color in our world, life would be quite dull.  Color also carries meaning and symbolism.  Each color feather that you find offers guidance beyond bringing your attention to being present and feeling supported by the universe.  The meaning of colors connects to all aspects of life, so when you create art with color, know that your art will influence others with the positive symbolism that the colors carry.

Below you will find the color interpretations of feathers, written by Melanie Beckler (psychic channel, author, and spiritual teacher).

Watercolor Feather Art

  1.  Download the feather template from HGTV Magazine.
  2.  Cut the feathers out and trace onto watercolor paper.
  3.  Cut each watercolor paper feather out before painting.
  4.  Paint the feathers on the side of paper that does not show pencil marks, or carefully erase  remaining pencil marks.  Use watercolors of your choosing.  Make the feathers interesting by  allowing colors to bleed into one another while they are still wet.  Sprinkle some salt onto the wet watercolor to achieve a textured effect.
  5.  For additional depth and meaning to your feathers, drip onto each feather, one drop of  your favorite emotional essential oil blend such as:  Peace, Console, Forgive, Passion, Cheer,  Balance,  Motivate, and Serenity.
  6.  When fully dry, choose a background in a contrasting color tone to your group of feathers.  I upcycle  scraps of matte board from local picture frame storefronts.
  7.  Use white glue to secure each feather in place.  I allow some of the edges to curl up away  from the background to show dimension.
  8.  Cut a piece of jewelry making hemp cord, and secure in place with a low temperature hot  glue gun.  Allow the waviness of the cord to take on an organic shape.
  9.  Frame your DIY Feather Art in a shadow box style frame.  The least  expensive option is to hot glue a piece of hemp cord onto the back of the art and display  unframed in the location of your choice.

Brown Paper Bag Feather Art

  1.  Download the feather template from HGTV Magazine.
  2.  Cut the feathers out, cut open the paper bag, and trace onto one surface layer of the paper  bag.
  3.  Cut each watercolor paper feather out before painting.
  4.  Paint the feathers on the side of paper that does not show pencil marks, or carefully erase  remaining pencil marks.  Using 3 different colors of metallic tempera paint, splatter each  color paint onto each feather.
  5.  When fully dry, choose a background in a contrasting color tone to your group of feathers.  I up-cycle  scraps of matte board from local picture frame storefronts.
  6.  Use double stick tape to secure each feather in place.  I allow some of the edges to curl up away from the background to show dimension.
  7.  Cut a piece of jewelry making hemp cord, and secure in place with a low temperature hot  glue gun.  Allow the waviness of the cord to take on an organic shape.
  8.  Frame your DIY Feather Art in a shadow box style frame.  The least  expensive option is to  hot glue a piece of hemp cord onto the back of the art and display  unframed in the  location of your choice.

DIY Feather Art Variations:

  1.  Paint 3 different colors of metallic tempera paint onto the bottom edge of each feather.
  2.  Paint white glue onto the bottom edge of each feather and sprinkle with metallic glitter  colors of your choice.  A sturdier paper as opposed to brown paper bag paper is a better  choice for glue & glitter feathers.  Brown construction paper was used for the above  example.
  3.  Display your feathers on a natural color burlap canvas.  Use tacky glue to secure in place.
  4.  Create feather art for all seasons: spring, summer, winter, fall.
  5.  Paint watercolor feathers on both sides and hang on a string for home decor.

Essential Activity:

Enjoy this activity any time of year.  It is especially wonderful to incorporate a hands on art activity into holiday celebrations with children of all ages – yes adults too!  No matter what holidays we celebrate, feathers are a universal spiritual symbol throughout the world.  Share the knowledge and meaning of feathers with friends and family members.  Pick up the next feather that you see and treasure its message.

Essential Oil Disclaimer:

I only use essential oils from the true leading essential oils company in the world – doTERRA. Based on personal experience and scientific knowledge, it is even more dangerous to inhale and impure essential oil, than it is to ingest and apply it.  I once got headaches from essential oils that claimed to be therapeutic grade from a company who claimed to be the world leader in essential oils.  Those essential oils proved to be fragrance oils, as over time, I developed fragrance toxicity.

A true certified pure therapeutic grade essential oil will not make you feel any level of dis-ease.  As the marketplace becomes flooded with essential oil companies who make untrue claims, please be mindful of what you bring into your homes. The energy of impurity is simply not healthy for the energy of you or your home.  Keep it simple, keep it pure, choose well, choose doTERRA for safety, purity, and results that work like magic. I am living proof.  Remember, happy, healthy, and free is your birthright and smart choices equals vitality plus success.
